Two Ways to Update Your Old Home

My wife and I finally decided to buy a home. The city we live in is very old and has many homes built pre 1960.  We knew that any home we were going to buy was going to need some serious upgrades done.

Older homes generally cost less and the reason is because they need some work done. They also tend to cost more to heat and cool. But we knew that.

However we wanted to spend our money wisely by adding some value to our home and doing things we could enjoy. The two things we ended up doing are great ways to update your old home. Read on for what these two ways are.

#1 Hardwood Floor Refinishing

The home we purchased in very nice but very old. It needed some upgrades. Although it had hardwood floors, they were outdated in terms of the style of the finish. We both love modern design and wanted a darker stain on the floors.

When we looked at the cost of getting new hardwood floors, we just about got sick on the spot! It was going to cost us well over $4000 to have the floors installed. We didn’t have that type of money.

So we went to Google and searched for floor refinishing Calgary and came across Woodfellow Flooring. The owner Alain was very friendly and mentioned that the cost of refinishing the floors was going to be much cheaper.

He was true to his word as his quote came in at $2300. Now that’s a number we could afford. We went ahead and had Alain come in and refinish and stain our floors. He did so using a very eco friendly way by doing it dustless.

The stain we choose was called dark walnut and offers a nice contrast to our light color walls and white finishing’s.

#2 Countertops

We still felt we needed to update our home even more. My wife loves to cook and we had a nice kitchen, but the countertops sucked.

She had always wanted black marble kitchen countertops and I felt they would look nice with the white kitchen cabinets and dark walnut hardwood floors.

We went ahead and had the kitchen countertops done by Abstract Stone. They did a wonderful job fabricating the cuts and odd size of our countertops.

In the end it cost us another $2800 but these two updates were well worth it. They have added long term value to our home shall we choose to sell. But we both love this home so much that selling is not on our mind.

So if you have an old outdated home and don’t want to spend a lot but add value to your home, be sure to get your hardwood floors refinished and some new countertops.
